چکیده

Oxygen free radicals have been implicated as mediators of tissue damage in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of our study was to assess the lipid peroxide products and antioxidant status in rheumatoid arthritis patients (RA). The study involved determination of two plasma lipid peroxide products, malondialdehyde (MDA) and conjugated dienes (CD), two plasma antioxidant vitamins (C and E ) in 91 RA patients and 26 healthy subjects. The results showed that rheumatoid patients had increased plasma CD but not MDA and decreased plasma vitamin E, when properly expressed per unit cholesterol and triglyceride. This finding suggested that RA patients had increased oxidant stress that might play a role in the tissue damage and inflammation process of this disease. SOUTHEAST ASIAN J TROP MED PUBLIC HEALTH Vol 31 No. 2 June 2000 336 malondialdehyde (MDA), conjugated dienes (CD), vitamin E (Vit E), vitamin C (Vit C), cholesterol and triglyceride. MDA was determined by its reaction with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) to form a red MDA-TBA complex (Das et al, 1990) which was quantitated by fluorometry (Richard et al, 1991). CD was measured as relative absorbance at 233 nm wavelength (Beuge and Aust, 1978; Hunter and Mohamed, 1986). Plasma vitamins E and C were determined by a fluorometric method (Taylor et al, 1976) and a spectrophotometric method (Omaye et al, 1979) respectively while plasma cholesterol and triglyceride were quantitated with a commercial enzymatic kit. Statistical analysis All data were expressed as mean±SD. Unpaired student’s t-test was used for between-group comparisons. Differences were considered of statistical significance when the p-value was less than 0.05.

Oxidative stress and enzymatic antioxidant status in rheumatoid arthritis: a case control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic multisystem disease of unknown cause. Formation of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxides as a result of disease activity may play an important role. Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant status are the hallmarks in patients of RA as observed in recent years. The objectives of the study was to determine oxidative stress ...

Dyslipidemia with Altered Oxidant-antioxidant Status in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a clinical condition accompanied by inflammation and oxidative stress. In this study, we compared levels of antioxidants vitamin-E and C along with lipid profile between rheumatoid arthritis patients and healthy controls. We also looked into presence of any correlation between dyslipidemia, the antioxidants vitamins and lipid peroxide product among rheumatoid arthritis p...

Circulating lipid peroxidation, plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant status in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The aim of the study was to investigate the levels of lipid peroxidation, and both plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant states in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The population consisted of 60 subjects divided into two groups, 30 subjects had evidence of rheumatoid arthritis and age and sex matched healthy subjects were studied as controls. The level of plasma and erythrocyte thiobarbituric a...

Effect of Allopurinol and Vitamin E on Rat Model of Rheumatoid Arthritis Abstract: Objectives: Rat collagen IIinduced arthritis is a model of chronic inammation induced by mycobacterium butyricum and collagen

Objectives: Rat collagen II–induced arthritis is a model of chronic inammation induced by mycobacterium butyricum and collagen II. It is characterized by similar pathophysiological and pathobiochemical changes as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in humans. In the present study, the biochemical effects of vitamin E and allopurinol (Allo) on RA of rats were investigated. Methods: Forty male rats were d...

Antioxidant status & lipid peroxidation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a debilitating, chronic multisystem disease with an unknown etiology. Recent findings indicate that increased oxidative stress and/or defective antioxidant status contribute to the etiology of RA. The present study was undertaken to examine the oxidant and antioxidant systems in patients with RA and healthy controls. METHODS Twenty two pati...
